Professor Mohammad Muinuddin Khan: As a man and as an educationist in accounting arena of Bangladesh

1. M A Kashem

Md. Abul Kashem, Controller General of Accounts, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh

When I was in Dhaka University, Professor Mohammad Muinuddin Khan was in Commerce Faculty. I heard his name from my roommates at S.M. Hall. He was a senior teacher. He was best known for his book “Advanced Accounting”. This was an authentic publication, especially at graduation level. His book was very popular even among college students.

When I joined the BCS Audit & Accounts Cadre in December 1983, we became his students as Audit & Accounts Cadre officers. We were 22 in a batch. He was a guest speaker in our Academy. He taught us accounting. Most of the cadre officers in our batch were from non-accounting background. This was a real challenge for him.

He started his course keeping in mind “fun and learn” process. We were BCS officers, but we have to learn accounting. He could feel our nerve. We were very enthusiastic about his teaching approach. He spent time with us not as teacher but as friend, philosopher and guide. A lot of interesting stories of his past students, even in Audit & Accounts cadre’s senior officers, were told. He made us his junior colleagues. He treated us with honour and dignity. Starting from the definition of debit (Dr) and credit (Cr.), he taught us trial balance, balance sheet, final accounts, etc. He was humorous, but professional. At the end of our training period, we all qualified in his accounting exam.

We entertained him in a Chinese restaurant in 1985 where incidentally my wife was present. She saw him there. Later in early 2004, she was narrating me the wonderful session of Professor Muinuddin Khan. When she was his student in an MBA class in a local private varsity, she was very impressed. This is Professor Muinuddin Khan who taught me and my wife as well. May Allah keep him in good health and happiness.

2. Abdus Salam FCA

Professor Mohammad Muinuddin Khan: His contribution to business education is unparallel in Bangladesh

Md. Abdus Salam FCA, Former President of ICAB and Board Director, Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited

I am his student since 1973 at the University of Dhaka. I feel honoured and proud to introduce myself as a student of Prof. M M Khan, one of the finest professors in the University of Dhaka. Before joining the University as student, I heard the name of Sir due to his wonderful books on Advanced Accounting that earned him reputation at home and at international levels. Today, although many books are coming from America and Europe they are still not at par with the books of Prof. M M Khan. We all read his books which were the masterpieces throughout time. His books contributed a lot in getting us where we are working at the forefront of business and the economy.

As a teacher, his zeal and passion for teaching has been unmatched.  The respect and recognition he has achieved is unparalled in the field of accounting. He ornamented the position of Dean and Chairman in Dhaka University Business Faculty as well in the Department of Accounting & Information Systems two terms. He was an Advisor to the Caretaker government of Bangladesh. He was also appointed the Pro Vice Chancellor of Southeast University and Vice Chancellor of ASA University Bangladesh. He made tremendous contribution in the country by serving at the top level. He has earned honour, respect, love of those who has ever worked with him.

He was one of the best teachers in Bangladesh. Sir taught with full commitment. He showed fatherly affection to his students. Today most of those high profile professionals who are associated with accounting professions and are established in the society with high name and fame were the students of Prof. Muinuddin Khan Sir.

3. Momtaj Uddin

Professor Mohammad Muinuddin Khan: He himself is his comparison in Bangladesh

Professor Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed FCMA, Former President of ICMAB, Former Chairman and Professor, Department of Accounting & Information Systems, University of Dhaka

It is really a matter of great honour and pride on my part to say something about our honourable teacher Prof. M M Khan Sir. Before taking admission into Dhaka University, due to his written accounting books, I heard of sir. Nowadays, many books are coming from America and Europe but at that time, we had no books except the books by Prof. M M Khan Sir. We all used to read his books as they were the complete books. If we followed his books, we did not need to follow any other books either. If in the field of commerce education we did not get his books at that time, we could not reach at such position today.

As a man he is not comparable to anyone. He himself is his comparison. I dreamt when I grow I would be like Khan Sir. In fact, it is not possible. The familiarity and recognition he has is impossible to earn. Sir was a Dean and Chairman in Dhaka University Business Faculty. Later, he became an Advisor of the Caretaker Government of Bangladesh. He also became the Vice Chancellor of ASA University. He has earned everything honour, respect, love, education, knowledge, chance of working at the top level of a state; everything a man wants in his life. I do not know how many men get it in his life. It is not possible for all to get it.

As a teacher I see him to be one of the best teachers. Sir taught with a full voice and having father like affection for his students and the students would catch his lecture very easily. In the arena of accounting the contribution sir has made is immeasurable and undeniable. Today most of those professionals who are associated with accounting professions and established in the society are the students of Muinuddin Sir.

When Khan Sir was the Chairman, I was the student. After many years when I became the Chairman of this department, sir has retired. But by turns it is the contribution of sir to advance the department.

Sir has retired systematically from us.  But sometimes we invite him to join any of the programs arranged by the Business Faculty by Dhaka University and he joins us if remains in good health. At last I would like to say that if I unwillingly hurt sir because of various official red tapism, I beg apology to sir. I hope sir will pardon me. I pray to the Almighty Allah for his good health and long life.

4.Prof. Shibli

Professor Mohammad Muinuddin Khan:  A Unique Personality

Professor Shibli Rubayat Ul Islam, Dean, Faculty of Business Studies, University of Dhaka

It is indeed an honor for me to write something about my much respected Prof. Muinuddin Khan Sir.Khan Sir is a person of high moral and unique characteristics, who is not only a good teacher but also a great personality with capability of running administration smoothly.

As a teacher he got the highest honor and respect from his students and still the students remember his classes as well the book on accounting that he wrote, which was their text for a long time. He wrote the book at a time when a book on accounting by a Bangladeshi author was the demand of the time.

His dynamic administrative capability as a Professor, Chairman and as a Dean brought a new dimension in this faculty. Because of his extraordinary ability he was later called in as an Advisor of Caretaker Government.

He is great as a colleague, unique as a teacher, unparallel as an administrator and great as a human being.

I wish him much more success in life and a good health to carry forward his benevolent work.

5. Abul Hosen

Professor Mohammad Muinuddin Khan: We are proud of Khan Sir

Syed Abul Hossain, Former Minister, Government of Bangladesh and Managing Director, SAHCO International Limited

A good teacher is indispensible for a sound and quality education system. If we talk about the Accounting, the name of Prof. MM Khan pops up in our mind as one of the best teachers ever found. His prolific role as a teacher has embarked the University of Dhaka as one of the best iconic educational institution for Accounting in Bangladesh.

In any profession or in any administration, it needs to build a transparent management and it must requires good accounting system. This legendary teacher has taught a large number of students through his thoughtful lessons and eventually those students have been emerged as leaders in their respective field. Prof. Khan was not only a teacher but also a guide and philosopher. He imparted the essence of knowledge on accounting that can be perceived through the achievement of his student who is successful in their profession. Besides teaching in University of Dhaka, he has also contributed many other educational and academic institutions in Bangladesh.

Specially myself, when I had been a student of intermediate class, I heard his name and fame of Prof MM Khan from many sources. Prof. MM Khan is author of many accounting books and those books have been inducted as text books for B.Com (Honours) and also for Master degree programme in Bangladesh. He was a renowned teacher and also a famous writer that made the word ‘Accounting’ and ‘Prof. MM Khan’ are synonymous. His books are always easy to understand and comprehend.

It is worth mentioning while Prof MM Khan used to deliver lectures in the class room, average and mediocre students even clearly understood his lessons. An excellent teacher like him is undoubtedly proud for the University of Dhaka. It is very hard to find such an eminent scholar and teacher who can live upto our expectation. Acknowledging his remarkable wisdom the Caretaker Government appointed Prof. MM Khan as an Adviser. We are proud of the accomplishment of Prof. MM Khan. We are indebted to the contribution of Prof. MM Khan and that reminds us a noble verse,

‘Guru jadiekbornoshisshoreshikhaikono din

pritibitenaidrobbojadia shod korbeseirin’

(If a teacher teaches a single letter to a student

There is nothing on this earth to repay that debt.)”

6. Dr. shafique Ahmed

Professor Mohammad Muinuddin Khan: He is comparable to none

Professor Dr. Shafique Ahmed Siddique, Chairman, Board of Trustees, BUBT

As a man Professor Muinuddin Khan Sir is not comparable to anyone. He himself is his comparison. When I grew I always dreamt of becoming a teacher like Khan Sir. The recognition he has earned is impossible to earn for any other person. Sir was the Dean of the Faculty of Business Studies and Chairman of the Department of Accounting & Information Systems of the University of Dhaka.

Later, he became an Advisor of the Caretaker Government of Bangladesh. He was also appointed as the Vice Chancellor of ASA University. He has earned a great deal of honour, respect, love, knowledge, wherever he worked.  He achieved everything that a man wants in his life.

As a teacher I see him to be one of the best teachers. Sir taught with a full voice and having father-like affection for his students. The students would catch his lecture very easily. In the arena of Accounting the contribution sir has made is immeasurable and unthinkable. Today most of the professionals who are associated with accounting professions and established in the society are his students.

When Khan Sir was the Chairman, I was the student. After many years, when I joined the Department as a Faculty member, I took him as a model. I also recall the contribution of Sir to the development of the Department at that time was remarkable.

7. CEO & MD of JBL

Professor Mohammad Muinuddin Khan: Playing important role in making prosperous Bangladesh

Md. Abdus Salam FCA, CEO & Managing Director, Janata Bank Limited

Professor M M Khan has made outstanding contribution to the discipline of accounting education and profession. His name has spread across this part of the Asian region for singular contribution as writer of Advanced Accounting. There is no denial of the fact that without his books business education, especially accounting education would have been very difficult to come into today’s position in Bangladesh.

Once to receive higher education in accounting was very tough due to limited scope and limited facility and also due to financial inability of the majority of our students to afford educational cost. Even commerce education was not so affordable. To study Chartered Accountancy, students were to go to England. It was very costly matter. At that time Professor Khan emerged as an angel with his books for us. His books were chosen as texts for B.Com, B.Com (Hons), MCom, MBA, ICAB, ICMAB and different levels of training on accounting principles and practices.

When there remains a copy of Advanced Accounting of Prof. M M Khan in hand, a student felt honoured and proud. These books were taught at all colleges and universities including general and technical institutions. It was a time when accounting meant MM Khan. So it is fact what impact his books made in the flourishment of commerce education in Bangladesh.

As a man and as a teacher, Khan Sir is a very successful person.  As a teacher he has been teaching accounting for over 50 years. He was the Chairman of the Department of Accounting & Information Systems in the University of Dhaka and also the Dean of the Faculty of Business Studies of this University. He was appointed Vice Chancellor of ASA University Bangladesh, before that he was the first Pro Vice Chancellor of Southeast University.

He was the Advisor of the Caretaker Government. He made invaluable contribution to accounting education and profession in Bangladesh both as a teacher and as an author. In his long teaching career he has presented many jewels for the country who are now high officials or key persons at different organizations/enterprises, public administrations and top banks. As a successful teacher at different public and private universities and the policy makers of the state his contributions are notable. I am really proud to be a student of such a great personality and a great teacher. May Allah grant him a long and healthy life to serve the profession and the nation.

8. SIBL MD

Professor Mohammad Muinuddin Khan: As a man and as an educationist

Md. Shafiqur Rahman, Managing Director, Social Islami Bank Limited

It is a matter of great privilege and honour for me that I was a student of Prof. M M Khan Sir. Alhamdulillah. I attended his classes when I was a student of Honours as back as in the years from 1969 to 1973 in the Faculty of Business Studies in the University of Dhaka. As a man I found him as pleasant, kind, punctual, disciplined, committed, resourceful, wise, efficient and, above all, very smart. He is quite an example and illustrious personality. And as a teacher of Accounting he is, undoubtedly, one of the best in Bangladesh. I respect and admire him for his sincerity and dedication to his profession.

His classes were always interesting as he used to teach us in a very simplified and flexible manner. The tough and rather boring subject of Accounting became interesting and easy for us because of his impressive and admirable techniques and style of teaching. He had an amazing ability of encouraging the students and he always suggested ways as to how to improve in studies. His classes were interactive and he encouraged us to ask questions and clear our confusions. He allowed us to participate in discussions during the classes which inspired us a lot to share our views with each other. I found him to be very helpful as a teacher. He was very patient and used to explain things until we understood. In the tutorial classes he used to be very informal with his students which made us very comfortable and eager to learn more. Just like a father he used to teach us, correct us and inspire us to learn and to be good persons in our lives.

Prof. M M Khan Sir has contributed to our society in general and accounting students in particles through his many roles viz. teacher, author, Vice Chancellor of a private University and Advisor of the Caretaker Government. He made invaluable contribution to Accounting education and profession in Bangladesh both as a teacher and an author of books on Accounting. His books on accounting are very informative and important for the students of business discipline.

As a teacher he taught accounting for more than 50 years. He was the Chairman of the Department of Accounting in the University of Dhaka and also the Dean of the Faculty of Business Studies of the University of Dhaka. He was appointed Vice Chancellor of ASA University Bangladesh in 2007. In his long teaching career he has prepared many jewels for the country who were his direct disciples and who are now high officials or key persons at different organizations, administrators, top bankers and successful teachers at different public and private universities at home and abroad. He has always been playing a very important role in building a prosperous nation. I am really proud to be a student of such a unique personality and a great teacher like Professor Mohammad Muinuddin Khan. May Allah Subhanahuta’la grant him a safe, sound and long life.

9. Kholilir Rahman DMD

Professor Mohammad Muinuddin Khan: A successful man from all sides

Md. Khalilur Rahman Chowdhury FCA, Deputy Managing Director, Rupali Bank Limited

Honourable Prof. M M Khan was not my teacher directly. But I got him when I was a student of ICAB. Sir taught us Management Accounting. Of sir, the thing which I liked very much was his good look which I have not seen in any teacher in my life. This was his plus point. Nor he had only a manly voice but had an attracting manner of pronunciations: above all, his way of presenting a complicated topic in such a manner that it became so easy to the students and they faced no difficulty in understanding and learning the topic. In this connection, I do not find anyone equivalent to him. It is he who equalizes with himself.

With regards to his books Prof. M M Khan I would like to say that his books are his unimpeachable creation. I saw many books at that time. The books on accounting written in English language by him were so precise and clear-cut that no student faced any difficulty in studying accounting at advanced level even I have not yet found any book comparable to the book of Prof. M M Khan. I consider him a successful man from all sides, or as a teacher, or as a writer and so on.  In fine, I wish our sir a good health as well as a long life.

10. Lt. Gen. Md. Jahangir

Professor Mohammad Muinuddin Khan: An ideal both as a person and as an educationist

Lt. Gen. Md.  Jahangir Alam Choudhury (Retd.), Advisor, Standard Construction Limited

Professor Mohammad Muinuddin Khan is a man of intellect whom I respect and admire for his dedication to his profession. While completing my undergraduate degree I was lucky to have him as my teacher. Accounting used to come alive in his class as he did not follow any rigid technique. Instead of looking at abstract formulas, sir used to explain with image what the formulas represent.

Muinuddin sir’s classes were always interesting as his style of teaching was very flexible. He used to be very patient and explained things until we understood. Sir was very helpful and suggested ways to improve. He had the amazing ability of encouraging us and solely for him I started taking interest in my studies. There used to be healthy discussions in his class which generated new ideas and increased our curiosity about the subject. He is one of my absolute favorites as he used to approach everything with a sense of challenge rather than task.

Muinuddin sir has contributed a lot to accounting education and profession in Bangladesh. He has written a number of books on accounting which are very informative and handy for business students. He served as an Advisor to the Caretaker government of Bangladesh successfully though for a very short duration. He is an ideal both as a person and as an educationist and his contribution to accounting education can never be compared to any other.

11. MA Hakim

Professor Mohammad Muinuddin Khan: A man of inspiration

Professor M.A Hakim, Chairman, Department of Accounting & Information Systems, University of Dhaka

Though I was not his direct student in the academic class however I have learnt many academic activities and directions from this high personality throughout my professional life. The very day when we joined the department in 1983 as faculty members, he welcomed all of us and conferred professional advice regarding our duties and responsibilities as faculty members. Since then I have found him as a great personality having humanity, humility and strong work ethics.

Having a strong educational background in accounting and professional management, during his career, Professor M M Khan was a short term consultant of Planning Commission of Bangladesh government. He was also closely involved with some other professional bodies in Bangladesh, where his contribution in the development of accounting education in our country is remarkable. Moreover his contribution for accounting, auditing and tax management is praiseworthy. He was consultant of many national and international projects in the area of accounting, finance, economics and management. He conducted series of training programs on accounting profession for the last four decades in developing human resources. I was one of the team members for a national project under his dynamic leadership where I found dexterity in him in commanding, directing and meeting the deadlines of the projects.

He wrote a book on accounting which was considered as holy book in the area of accounting education in the early sixties.  He served the university by holding different positions in the university administration, as Chairman of Department, Dean of the Faculty and member of the Finance Committee etc. He served the country as an honorable Adviser of the Caretaker Government of Bangladesh. He was also the honorable founder Vice Chancellor of ASA University of Bangladesh and Pro-Vice Chancellor of Southeast University.

Khan Sir is very hardworking, honest, sincere and amiable person. Any person would be motivated and inspired if they follow the beliefs and work ethics of this legend.

12. Mujib Uddin

Professor Mohammad Muinuddin Khan:  He is great or unparallel

Dr. Mojib Uddin Ahmed, Chairman, Investment Corporation of Bangladesh and Chairman, Department Tourism & Hospitality, University of Dhaka

It is really a matter of pride and honour on my behalf to say something about our honourable teacher Prof. M M Khan Sir. A man with such qualities is only comparable to himself. As a teacher I do not find any one equal to him. His greatness as a man who always helped people whenever they needed is exceptional. I will keep sir above in the list of great men. A man who has a broad- mind and who is a man without any pride is very rare at this stage. I have never seen him to feel pride for anything at any time.

Sir was my teacher directly and I am totally associated with sir since the very beginning of my teaching profession. Thus, I sit in room where sir once used to sit. Any one may say that I am fortunate as the room I sit in and from where I will retire one day is the room once sir sat and retired. This is the very room from where I too will retire one day. It is matter of great fortune for me.

His accounting books Volume-I and Volume-II are masterpieces. No one had shown such courage to write such books. Nowadays, because of prevalence of Bangla medium, the demand of his books has decreased. But those who want to learn accounting cannot but read the books by Prof. M M Khan Sir.  May be students will continue reading these books in the years to come. His books have everything ready and arranged in unique way in the field of accounting.

I am much acquainted with sir personally and at the family level. Sir had gone to my residence several times. I too had gone to his residence too. He always keeps news of my parents how they are. When my father fell ill, he inquired of his illness and asked how he was then. Sir was a teacher and I am also a teacher now. But there can be no comparison with him. I am lucky enough that I am his student.

I was his colleague also. I have learnt many things from him as well. When a man devotes himself in teaching profession, he reaches to the higher level. The success of a teacher lies in presenting his lessons to his students in such a way that they understand it very easily. When I see sir, I try to be like him and try to follow him. I need to go a long way to reach him.

14. Khalrda Khanom

Professor Mohammad Muinuddin Khan: A very high personality

Professor Begum Khaleda Khanam, Professor, Department of Accounting & Information Systems, University of Dhaka

Professor M. Muinuddin Khan is a man we whom like most as a good teacher and as a dedicated educationist. He taught us Accounting. We enjoyed his class because of his lively and interesting way of teaching. He explained everything so nicely and clearly that we did not get chance to ask any question in the class. He is a very high personality. He is polite, communicative and accessible. His honesty, sincerity, good behaviour, high concern to the needs of the students made him a good teacher.

He has enormous contributions in the field of Accounting Education. He is famous for his books entitled “Advanced Accounting”. He was Pro-Vice-chancellor of South East University and Vice-Chancellor of ASA University. He was elected Dean of the Business faculty of Dhaka University. I wish him all the best in life

15. Md. Humayun

Professor Mohammad Muinuddin Khan: His contribution to accounting education is unparallel in Bangladesh

Professor Dr. Md. Humayun Kabir Chowdhury, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Southeast University

In my twenty five years of teaching career I have encountered many scholars of many faculties but at least 5% of top of faculty members I have encountered are short of teaching career compared to Prof. MM Khan. His contribution in brief is that he wrote a Text Book which was taught by most of institutions in the last 30 to 40 years and that was Bible of Accounting discipline. Most of the faculty members used it as reference of text book in the field accounting book of Prof. M M Khan.

As a human being he is excellent. He knows how to respect others. I am very junior but I was taken in the selection committee of ASA University when he was the Vice Chancellor of that University. I taught a course on marketing the only because of request of Prof. MM Khan. He requested me to teach marketing Research Course. I taught over there frequently.

I was reviewer of Journal published by ASA University. I also contributed to it and whenever I met him he always received me. Although I am very junior like I was the student of Prof. MM Khan not directly but I respected him simply like my direct teacher. So his way of respecting others always impresses me.

I learn from him a lot as to how to respect other, how to convey positive attitude to others. All these things I learn from Prof. MM Khan. He was an Advisor to the Caretaker Government of Bangladesh for a short time but personally I feel that doesn’t think him as a Boss rather he feels to share with others. He is a nice person that people should fellow him, can learn something from his cordiality and his honesty. His attitude to show respect to others is very remarkable and his contribution to accounting education is unparallel. I really wish him all the successes and good health.

16. Dr. Abu Saied Khan FCA

Professor Mohammad Muinuddin Khan: His books of Accounting as sacred as the Bible to accounting students in Bangladesh

Dr. Md. Abu Sayed Khan FCA, Member, Finance, BTCL

I was a student of Dhaka University in the year of 1975. I am fortunate that I have got a chance to attend the class of Prof. M M Khan. Sir used to teach us Advanced Accounting which was the most difficult subject in the Accounting Department. In his class, sir would explain the lesson in such a technique that it became easy and comprehensive to us. The difference between other teachers and him is that he yet remains in the heart of thousands of students which was impossible for others to achieve.

In this regard, he is second to none. To talk something about his books, I can say that when at the ending stages of the Pakistani dominion, import of books from India was banned; sir wrote his epoch-making books Advanced Accounting Vol-I and Vol-II; the each paragraph of which was enriched with information and knowledge. It was our only text book though somebody opined in different manners. I can say that there was no alternative to this book whatsoever. Even today as his students we feel that to accounting students like us, his books of Accounting are as sacred as the Bible.

It is possible for me to say something about how outstanding as a man our sir is. I would like to give a small example here. When sir was an Advisor of the Caretaker Government, I met him in his office with a view to solving a problem urgently. Sir thought this problem to be his own problem. So, he solved it so quickly which is beyond my thinking. It has been possible only for sir. This shows the dimension of his personality. Though aged, he still looks young and smart. In fine, I wish, sir, a good health and long life.

17. Moniruzzaman

Professor Mohammad Muinuddin Khan: A torchbearer of Accounting in Bangladesh

M. Moniruzzaman FCA, Partner, ACNABIN Chartered Accounts

There are few people in our society who inspire lives of others and guide them to enlighten and praise worthy lives. My respected teacher, Professor Mohammad Muinuddin Khan is one of those few. He had inspired my life and like me thousands of other accounting students and business personnel. I was a student of Dhaka University and also fortunate to be a direct student of Professor Khan Sir. I learnt lot of accounting, finance and business related things from Khan Sir which help me a lot in my present professional life.

After completion of my post graduation from Dhaka University Khan Sir had inspired me to secure a professional degree and motivated me to study chartered accountancy. If he did not guide me and show me the ways at that time I would have been a man of other disciplines. During my student life I found Khan Sir so popular that anyone and everyone who would think of pursuing a degree in commerce would get to know his legends from the senior students and teachers even before they get into the university or college.

Back then, accounting study meant Professor Muinuddin Khan and accounting studies without his books was literarily not possible. His name would inevitably cited whenever a discussion about commerce or accounting study would come up not only in the educational institutions but also in the public or private offices. He wrote his books on accounting during the days when there was not much reference books which could be used as complete study guides for commerce or accounting students. Thus he actually built the foundation of accounting study in the country through his book.

His mesmerizing persona and his encouragement intrigued the dream in me to walk the long way to pursue a professional degree in accounting while many of my batch mates started their career right after completion of post graduation. I and my batch mates from the university have been fortunate enough to have met him and listen to him in classes and in his office and he was an absolutely terrific faculty and of course, a friendly figure to guide us through almost everything. I can’t say enough about the magnitude of his influence on the students taught by him.

He always advised us to use our collective as well as individual talents, to do something for the society and serve the country. He has been terrific in terms of getting behind the relentless improvement of the commerce/business studies faculty of the University of Dhaka over the years and being dedicated to the quality of what we’re delivering. I can honestly say that there’s fewer than a handful of people in that era who had such high professional and personal standards.

I believe he has encouraged a lot of us to become what we are today. He used to think big in his heart and that touched us all. Despite all his achievements, he was quite a simple man and he never took pride for the grandeur he achieved. I always loved his discipline of teaching, and he would teach us with a father like affection and I tried to follow what he taught us in the class. Such was his influence on his students and I was not an exception to become his lifelong admirer.

He was a pioneer in developing the idea that accounting creates accountability. He relentlessly worked for developing a strong accountancy profession in this country and he was among the very few visionaries who believed that development of strong professionalism among the accountants in the country will act as a catalyst to ensure transparency in economic development of a developing nation like us. He was a dreamer. He consulted government institutions and acted as a think tank on many occasions for the development agencies in Bangladesh. Once he acted as an Advisor to the Caretaker Government of Bangladesh.

His pioneering role in development of accountancy education is also noteworthy. He was an outstanding educator and has contributed substantially to the theory and practice of accounting research during his career as an academician. He was an active participants in various international meetings of accountants and seminars on accounting education, and he was equally active in organizing seminars locally on various matters for the academic interests of students.

Despite being an academician, he had strong foothold and acceptability among the professional accountants in the country and he has been very much involved with the professional institutes of the accountants in Bangladesh. His national stature as accounting scholar, his seminal role in the evolution of accounting studies as academic and professional discipline in Bangladesh and his substantial influence on accounting education, has always been a matter the inspiration for many.

His books, lectures and leadership role made him the premier accounting educator of his era in Bangladesh. He completed 40 years of teaching in the highest seat of learning in Bangladesh, the University of Dhaka. He also took the role of Vice Chancellor of a premier private university in Bangladesh and continued to work his magic on the young and aspiring students of business studies.

Today, a large group of professional accountants who are leaders in the practice and in business, are either his students or influenced by him. My good wishes and prayers for his good health and long live will always follow him.

18. Prof Shareef

Professor Mohammad Muinuddin Khan: A man with a broad mind like him is rare

Professor A. N. M. Shareef, Dean, School of Business, UITS

To speak something about Prof. M M Khan is really a matter of great satisfaction. I consider myself to be a fortunate man in this regard. Being his student, I feel proud. In 1979, getting a job of the BCS cadre I joined Jogonnath College which was under the University of Dhaka. Dhaka University used to do everything including college admission, setting question paper, examining answer scripts and so on.

As part of my service I had to do these things with sir and I became close with sir day by day. I went to his residence several times, ate together with him and worked with him. Sir worked as an internal while I worked as an external. Thus, as long as sir resided at Syed Awlad Hossain Lane (Old Dhaka), I used to keep communication even at his house. I again consider myself to be fortunate thinking that when sir changed his residence shifted to Mohammadpur, his residence was near mine.

I learnt from sir how to set questions, how to examine answer scripts, how to make routine and so on. When I joined as a Director of Education Bureau, sir became a member of a governing body. Sir said, “I am a member. You too become a member of it. We will jointly nurse the institute.”

Relationship between sir and me has reached to a position that I have got close contact during my joys and sorrows. Man like him with a broad mind is rare. He himself is his comparison. I have even seen him standing on street signing assignments of the students. In short, it is impossible for me to explain his greatness and his highness.

19. M A Sabur

Professor Mohammad Muinuddin Khan: His humanity is excellent

M A Sabur, Chairman, MASCO Group

I was introduced to Prof. M M Khan through the Ideal Library. At that time, many of his books were published. Then, I used to edit those as his assistant. As result of working with him, I have seen his greatness, his personality, his knowledge and his highness. To comment on his personality, I can say in a word that his personality is excellent and it is rare. It never happened that a man returned from him without being helped whether they are students, teachers, well-wishers, everyone was important to him.

In regards of the books of Prof. M M Khan, his books were the only books at that time. These books were taught in the educational institutions for B.com, M.com and honours courses.   It is difficult to find any student of commerce faculty who did not read his books.

As I was not his student directly, I did not get any chance to attend his class. I came to know from his students that in the university he used to teach the most difficult subject. But he presented the lessons very easily and the students understood their lesson very clearly without facing least difficulty.  In fine, I would like to say that as a man, as a teacher, as a writer, he himself is his comparison.

20. Samsul Alam

Professor Mohammad Muinuddin Khan: A best teacher in the world of accounting and commerce education in Bangladesh

Md. Shamsul Alam, Managing Director, AKH Group

I feel it a great opportunity for me to express my feeling about our respected teacher Prof. Muuniuddin Khan. Prof. MM Khan is the best teacher in the world of accounting and commerce education in Bangladesh, he needs no introduction. Nobody can be compared with him. He is only comparable to himself.

I found him when I had been a student of Master’s class at the University of Dhaka. But before I joined the University I came to know about him from my father. It is through my father who had a library. In our library I saw the books written by Prof. M M Khan Sir. His books of Advanced Accounting Vol. I and Vol. II were so popular, it is quite impossible to express by writing. Why alone I, all can say without these books accounting education was impossible at that time.

When I happened to see Sir face to face, I saw him a very smart, handsome, well-mannered and a man like a model of an ideal father. Of all these the best thing is that Sir is always kind, caring and cooperative to all. His lecturing capacity and attracting the students were wonderful. Until and unless one did not listen to his lecture, he could not realize it how a teacher can keep his students by spell bornd by his teacher.

He is a big person in true sense of the term. As a teacher his career at Dhaka University was very dignified. He was elected as the Dean of the Faculty of Business Studies and appointed Chairman of Accounting & Information Systems. Department on this occasion later, he became Pro-Vice-Chancellor of a renowned private university and also Vice-Chancellor of another renowned private university. Even, he ornamented the post of Adviser to the Caretaker government of Bangladesh.

In different way Sir contributed a lot to the spread of education and nation-building activities in Bangladesh. He lend a big hand in the development of accounting profession in Bangladesh. ICAB, ICMAB and other institutions whether public and autonomous concerned with accounting and business education and profession, Sir had contributions over there also. Most of his students are now leading the nation in the field of business, teaching and accounting profession, even in policy making of the state.

So in my knowledge, I find him as the best in all respects as a teacher, as a writer and as a human being.  I pray that may Allah grant Sir a long life and good health.

21. Helaluzzaman

Professor Mohammad Muinuddin Khan: A highly regarded professor

Dr. A.K.M. Helal uz Zaman, Professor, Faculty of Business Studies & Treasurer, ASA University Bangladesh

Professor Md. Muinuddin Khan has been in the field of education for more than fifty years of which quite a long period he spent in the University of Dhaka in various capacities like Chairman, Department of Accounting & Information Systems, Dhaka University and Dean, Faculty of Business Studies, Dhaka University.

Currently he has been working as Adviser of ASA University Bangladesh. He was appointed as Founder Vice Chancellor of ASA University Bangladesh which was launched in 2007 with a social commitment to impart quality education to the tertiary level of students.

My professional attachment with Prof. Md. Muinuddin Khan dates back to 1977 when I joined as Lecturer in the Department of Accounting (now, Accounting & Information Systems) University of Dhaka. Initially I found him as Professor in the Department. Subsequently he became Chairman of the Department. He was highly regarded by his colleagues and students for his vast knowledge, impartial attitude, charming personality and commitment to work.

When I left the University of Dhaka to join the civil service in 1981, he advised me to get involved with education. However, I joined the civil service and served in different capacities. While I was working as the Secretary In-charge, Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs, I came to know from the Newspaper that Professor M.M. Khan was appointed as an Adviser to the Caretaker Government in 2006, assuming the office of the Adviser, he contracted me. This shows his usual attachment with his former colleagues and love for the juniors.

Caring attitude, love and affection for the colleagues and pleasant personality made him acceptable to all. His students are working in different capacities both in the public and private sectors. He is highly respected by his colleagues, students and members of the civil society.

On retirement from the civil service, I started my career as a teacher on the basis of experiences of the Dhaka University and other training institutes of the country. Prof. Khan picked me up for ASAUB in 2010. He was then working as the Vice Chancellor of the ASAUB. Again, I got the opportunity to work with such a knowledgeable, resourceful and compassionate person. He is always remembered for his pioneering role for establishing the foundation of business education in general and accounting education in particular in Bangladesh.

I wish him a sound health so as to contribute further towards development of business education.

22. Prof Dr. Kazi Shariful Alam

Professor Mohammad Muinuddin Khan: His lectures adequate to learn the difficult lessons

Professor Dr. Kazi Shariful Alam, Treasurer, AUST

I got myself admitted into the then ‘Department of Commerce’ in the University of Dhaka in 1970. In the very beginning of my university life, sir taught us ‘Advanced Accounting – 1’. He was a smart attractive and a handsome figure as if he were a ‘Pathan’, although he is a true Bengali. Sir always attended the classes in time. He taught us in such a way that we faced no complexity in understanding the complex lessons; especially his lectures were adequate to learn the difficult lessons.

During the Pakistani regime, import of text books from India was impossible. So, there was shortage of standard text book in the country. At that time Prof. MM Khan wrote a book on Advanced Accounting in 2 Volumes. These were the only books we had at that time in accounting courses at the university level. In our commerce department, never we needed the books except the books written by our beloved sir. According to me, his books were the complete books in this field.

As a teaching faculty, I served Dhaka University for about 32 years in different ranks and status. Sir was the Chairman in the Department of Accounting and elected Dean of the Faculty of Business Studies. When he was the Dean, I was the Chairman in the Department of Marketing. So, I got a good opportunity to come close to him and closely observe his administrative capability.

Since my student life, I have been getting love and affection from him. I consider myself to be a fortunate student as I have got such an affectionate teacher in my life.

23. Md Rafiqul Islam

Professor Mohammad Muinuddin Khan: His books on Advanced Accounting regarded by the student community as like as the Bible for Accounting

Md. Rafiqul Islam, Principal, Lalmatia Mohila College

It’s really a memorable event for me to write something regarding our respected teacher Prof. Muniuddin Khan. In a few words, it cannot be expressed; Prof. MM Khan is a teacher who is second to none. Nobody can be compared with him. He is only comparable to himself. I was one of his student when I was studying Accounting in the University of Dhaka.  The method of teaching of this renowned teacher is characterized by correct pronunciation of each word of lecture in mild voice with sweet tone which still haunts my mind.

Of all things the best in him is that when Sir conducted classes we need not had to go through at our residences. This was his great quality which cannot be found with no other teacher. Another quality that sir possessed was he used to remain present in the Department even under the scorching sun and through rain and storm even when there is minimum attendance of his students in the class. Another great quality of our hon’ble Sir, as I know in course of his professional career at Dhaka University, Sir never enjoyed any kind of leave, excepting as study leave for higher training in Computer skills and Research methodology in 1987 in USA.

As a writer too, I must say as I have said incase of other aspects of Sir as a writer of high standards which is comparable to him alone. His written books on Advanced Accounting have been regarded by the student community as like as the Bible for learning Accounting.

During the period when sir has written books on advanced accounting was considered as valuable books for learning Accounting and Business education. His style of writing the books was that even a common student can understand difficult lessons of accounting easily.

How much I can say about him when God Himself has gifted him these rare qualities. I want to conclude lastly only with a few words that Prof. M M Khan the President of Gulshan Commerce College, wherein I have been a member. When there is a meeting none of any committee member usually attends the meeting before Muinuddin Khan Sir in time. He is certain to be there in time, he always reaches in due time. Subject matter of the meeting according to the guidance of our sir has been fair, clear-cut, understandable and comprehensive. So in my knowledge he is the best in all respect as a teacher, as a writer and as a human being and as a perfect gentleman. In fine we pray to God as that Sir may live long in good health.

24. M A Kalam

Professor Mohammad Muinuddin Khan: Our honorable sir

MA Kalam, Founder Principal, Gulshan Commerce College

Professor Mohammad Muinuddin Khan is a bright star in the history of Bangladesh. He is a renowned intellectual and great contributor to the expansion of commerce education in the sub continent. He has come of an aristocratic family; he has achieved many great qualities of a complete man. He has shown the goal to our nation which has every possibility to flourish in it’s economy to cope with the changing and challenging economic situation of the present Globalized world.

He possesses some rare qualities for which the whole accounting world in Bangladesh respects him as a great personality. Punctuality, sincerity, devotion to work, depth of knowledge has made him a praiseworthy person. His ability to visualize a topic makes him as an unparallel personality. His delivery to the audience is very smart, clear and pleasant. All of these qualities have helped him to build the nation to make a with resourceful manpower. His attitude towards the people is very positive who tries to solve the problems cordially and wisely and that’s why he is very dear to the mass people.

He is not only a good teacher but also a good administrator also. Throughout his whole life, he has served the family, the society as well as the nation very efficiently. This is Prof. M M Khan who is a man of good health and sound mind. So still he looks like a handsome man and able to bear the heavy work load. Prof. M M Khan is a pioneering character and an educationist of high grade who has been playing an important role in building a prosperous nation.

As a Professor of Accounting, his contribution in this particular subject had made him as an institution. His teaching as well as his creations are not limited in an arena, which it has overflowed and enriched the whole nation in this modern world. Most of the high officials, bankers, Administrators and many driving forces of the country were his students. He taught at the Dhaka University for long 40 Years. He was Dean of Faculty of Business Studies of that University. Still he is involved with different local Universities as a teacher with the same devotion and enthusiasm as he delivered in his pre-retirement life at Dhaka University.

Now his vast and deep experience is needed for many institutions. As a Chairman of our Gulshan Commerce College, he is our pride. Coming very close to him on different occasions, I invented in him as a torch bearer. His all round performance has enriched our domain of knowledge. I believe he is not only my teacher but is also my guardian, Peer in field of education, Personality behavior, manner, Punctuality, Commitment, time management and all other respects. His company encourages us all the time. I wish him a long and sound life.

25. AR Khan Rana

Professor Mohammad Muinuddin Khan: A unanimously accepted as a best teacher

A R Khan Rana, CEO, Khan Associates

Professor Muinuddin Khan is a unanimously accepted as a best teacher of Accounting. In the field of accounting teaching, it is impossible to think without his contribution by only giving example. In him I have found a different image than other teachers. In this regard, he was a very successful and excellent teacher.

As soon as he entered in the class till the very end, the entire class would be used to be in spell bound. This is such a thing which not at all common with most of the teachers.

When he used to teach us, we would remain spell-bound and listen to his lecture. After entering in the class, sir would know the tactics how and which students should be controlled. One day, while sir was delivering his lecture on a subject entitled of Project Management, he in his lecture discussed the Jamuna Bridge Project to make our concept clear and understand the role of a big infrastructural project.

He started discussing each part of this project one by one. He discussed how much money needed to construct this mighty bridge, for how many years is its durability, how many people will be benefitted, how much benefit goes the government and so on. Since then we do not face any difficulty in understanding any project management issue.

I want to add another matter here. When we got him as our teacher, his age was about sixty five. We never realized him as a teacher of such age. We thought that his age would be hardly fifty. I am saying it because of his style of pronunciation and his body language. Because of these, he seemed to us as a young man. So, as a teacher I do not find any one comparable to him.

Sir is a founder Chairman of Governing Body of Gulshan Commerce College. I am also a member of the Governing Body. When a board meeting is convened, I never find him late to attend any of the meetings. Rather said, when we are late, we get ashamed. We are not as punctual as sir. Sir always abides by rules but we cannot maintain rules like sir used to follows. It is nothing but our failure.

Another matter is that I have heard many teachers discussing on politics but I have never found any political speech from our sir. We think that we do not have Prof M M Khan in each house but we wish to have many M M Khan in the society.

While sir attends a meeting, he does not think who the teacher is or who the student is or who the member is. Everything must be clear as it was his saying. One will speak something and then latter he will speak the rest.

I call him the father of accounting education in Bangladesh. Not only that, I have noticed that sir has earned much knowledge on English literature and has gone far into his philosophy regarding English literature. No doubt, sir has earned knowledge on various subjects. The energy and vigor I have found in him is absent in many.

There was a time when on accounting subject there was no alternative to the books in English version by Prof. M M Khan. Though a few personalities used to criticise his work, I think it fairs to influence his students even a little bit.

26. Absus Salam

Professor Mohammad Muinuddin Khan: His books still is as famous and popular as earlier

Professor  Abdus Salam Howlader, Principal, Mohammadpur Kendriya College

To speak the truth, it is a matter of great opportunity for me to talk something about Prof. M M Khan Sir. The more we speak of him in a big dimension it will be a little always. I myself is its evidence that how highly dignified personality sir is.

In 1973, I studied commerce in Dhaka University. Once a student told sir that his study would come to an end. Sir asked him the reason why his study would stop. The boy replied that his family could not send him money he needed to continue his study. Hearing this, sir said him that from today he would give the boy required money for study and also said him to ask for anything from him he needed.

In the university, sir used to teach the most difficult subject. But sir used to …… the lessons in front of us in such which became easy and concise so we started to think this subject as an easy subject for us.

It was one of the best qualities of sir which was absent in many teachers. It was the difference as sky and earth between sir and other teacher who teaches. In our time, those students who got star marks used to take admission in commerce department. If any of these good students asked sir any question during his delivering lecture in the class, I never heard sir had said today I would not answer and I would answer it latter after looking to it. From this, we can realize how deep his knowledge on his subject he had.

In 1965 or 1966, when the erstwhile government banned imparting books from India, a vacuum started to create in the field of commerce education. At that very right moment, sir published the books on accounting Volume-I and Volume-II, as if it were a torch bearing for us. At that time, these books were the only book in the field of accounting education also. As part of reading his books, we were also fortunate enough to read others books at the same time. But we will say that there is no book comparable to his books.

In the books of other writer, I saw that in their books there were discussions of some chapters while there were no discussions on some other chapters. But in the books of Prof. Muniuddin, we got all relevant chapters included in his book. Not only that, there was long list of illustration on each chapter.

For this reason, if a student, however weak he might be on the subject after goal through his book he would understand them very clearly. The students of any class whether B.com Pass or Honours or Master level, to all the students his books were acceptable. Not only this, his books are still as famous and popular as earlier.

27. GM Janata Bank

Professor Mohammad Muinuddin Khan: A teacher like him rarely found in Bangladesh

Md. Mosaddake-Ul-Alam, General Manager and Company Secretary, Janata Bank Limited

I take it a great opportunity to tell something about our honourable sir Prof. M M Khan, a teacher like him today is rarely found in our country.  I will rank sir in the list of great men. He is a man who has a broad-mind and who is a man without any pride is very rarely found in our society. He lives a simple life and has been never proud for his contribution.

I am a direct student of sir and associated with sir since the very beginning of my student life. It is known to all that accounting is a difficult subject. Sir taught more difficult courses of accounting like managerial accounting, financial management, costing, project management, etc. Whatever we have learnt in our university courses have given us a strong background and foundation. Based on this, we have risen and occupied the position we hold today. Our success and dignity remind us back to our academic life, about our teachers, especially great teachers like Khan Sir.

Accounting books of sir are not only masterpieces but also great creations. His books played the outstanding roles in the flourishment of accounting and commerce education in Bangladesh. There remains no one among commerce students of university or professional students of accounting like ICAB, ICMAB. ICSB, IBB or others who are in professional bodies have not read or touched the books of Advanced Accounting of Khan Sir.

Certainly, his books are considered as Bible of Accounting in Bangladesh. Even, other than these groups, non-professionals of accounting who want to learn accounting cannot but read the books of Khan Sir.  I believe students will continue reading these books in the years to come. These books are well-written to understand by all and remain unique in this field.

Like many of his affectionate students, I have learnt many things from sir. This is important that when a student passes out from the university, still he bears the ideals and philosophy of his teacher. The success of a teacher lies in his students that they bear it. Khan Sir is such a great teacher that he has been able to do it. This is his great success and he is the great. In the end I pray may Allah to grant him long life and good health.

28. Md. Shahjahan

Professor Mohammad Muinuddin Khan: A legend of accounting in Bangladesh

Md. Shahjahan, Ex-Registrar, BUET and Registrar, North South University

It is a great opportunity for me and I am delighted and proud to say little about my most beloved teacher Prof. M.M. Khan who backed me always to build my career. My achievement so far so as a successful faculty and also as an administrator is he who guided me all the way. I could never think of becoming a lecturer of accounting, it is his inspiration and guidance and also his teaching charisma that brought me in the teaching profession.

We called him Khan Sir and still we call him Khan Sir. As a teacher his helping attitude and the style of giving lecture and his personal guiding make the student easier to understand higher accounting.

The longest period I spent in BUET where I served for more than 18 years as Registrar from Dec 1991 to June 2010 till the date of my retirement. This is the longest service as Registrar in any Public University of Bangladesh in the history. The next day of the retirement from BUET I had to join ASA University Bangladesh as Registrar, where my honorable Sir Prof. M. M. Khan was the Vice Chancellor. Before my retirement he thought about me and offered me the position. With my humble capacity and having high respect to him without delay I joined there and served up to 17th July 2012 before joining as Registrar of North South University.

I am proud to say that Professor Md. Muinuddin Khan was the pioneer author of Advanced Accounting written in English in our country and he is the most precious ornament in the Accounting profession. Prof. M.M. Khan has been considered as a legend of accounting as a faculty, as an author, as an administrator, as a guest speaker and as a researcher and also as a supervisor of PhD students. His millions of students are speeded and disseminating knowledge in their respective field and also in teaching in top-ranking universities and institutions at home and abroad. He was not only the faculty of Dhaka University but an expert guest speaker of multiple Govt. Organizations, autonomous and other organizations, and institutions of the country and even abroad.

Any one can imagine how honest and simple he is. After taking oath at Bangabhaban as an Adviser to the Caretaker government on his way back I made a call to his cell phone to convey my congratulation. In reply he said Shahjahan without involving with any political party or politics, had been entrusted with the responsibility with the portfolio of Adviser in charge of Ministries of Industries, Textiles and Jute, Science and ICT. Let me see how best I can do during this short tenure. Please pray for me.

During the two weeks tour in 1969, our team leader & guide was Professor MA Baquer and Prof. Muinuddin Khan. Prof. M. M. Khan was our main focus as famous author of Advanced Accounting he was welcomed in all the places we had visited. His leadership and guidance the tour of about two weeks was very cheerful and was very easy for us. Before start of the tour all took a group picture with the then Vice Chancellor Dr. M.O. Gani where you may see our two young teachers Prof M.M. Khan, and Prof. MA Baquer. Most of the class mates of that picture had very high position in Government and other establishments during their life and one of them is Prof. Abdul Mannan who is currently the Chairman of UGC.

29. Khalilullah

Professor Mohammad Muinuddin Khan: An institution of business education in Bangladesh

M. Khalilullah Khan, Senior Adviser, Index IA Limited

When I saw my respected teacher Prof. MM Khan for the first time in my class room, I found him as a great person. In his deeds and activities, his appearance and human qualities- in all respects he is a charming personality.

Really, he is such a man. From the very first day when he started conducting our class, I have never felt the necessity for a house Tutor. We know that the Accounting subject is a difficult one and the students usually are afraid of it. In to this respect Sir has made difficult accounting subject as easy as possible and this was possible only for him.

That memory regarding our Sir haunts at our minds up till now. He is a good looking, smart and kind hearted person.

As an educationist he is uncomparable. Our Hon’ble Sir wrote a book on Advanced Accounting Vol. No (I) & Vol. No (II) which we used to read every now and then and the book has come very much useful for all the students. Had the book not been published, the subject of Accounting would remain not easy to us.

In Business Education the contribution of our honorable Sir is unparallel. In the field of education he worked   with upmost sincerity and dedication.

Prof. MM Khan Sir has become an institution of Business Education in Bangladesh. By virtue of contribution our Sir Business Education in Bangladesh has become so and attractive. In my knowledge a personality like him is one of the best in the business education in our country. At last, I wish our Sir a long life and good health.

30. Md Taufuqul Islam

Professor Mohammad Muinuddin Khan: His lectures are wonderful

Md. Taufiqul Islam Chowdhury, Director of Accounts, ASA International N.V.

It is a matter of great opportunity for me to say something about Prof. M M Khan Sir. When sir took classes, I would listen to him being stunned. I would think how a man could explain such a difficult thing in such an easy way. His lectures were wonderful. I still hear his voice and style of pronunciation.

When other teachers took a class for three hours, we got bored. But when Prof. M M Khan Sir took class, we could not realize how three or more hours had passed. We used to have no inconvenience if sir would take a class spending three or four hours. Whenever we asked him any question from any angle, sir would give its good solution. In my student life, I have never seen such a teacher like him. When about 20 students attend in the class of other teachers, then 40 students attend in the class of Muinuddin sir. It was due to the interest in his class.

During our college days we all have seen the books written by him, since then we studied his books. We have seen many kinds of books written by many teachers, but he had written the books in such an easy way that there is no book comparable to his books. We all read only the book of Muinuddin sir. It is his sole contribution in the field of accounting professionals also in Bangladesh.

31. Patwary

Professor Mohammad Muinuddin Khan:  An honorable person in all fields

Dr. M A Halim Patwary, Chairman, UCC Group

Professor M M khan was my teacher directly. I got sir from the beginning of my university life to the very end. Sir is a role model for my life. He possesses a very high-quality, personality and excellent teaching ability. No one returned from sir being frustrated. I have seen sir always optimistic. For example, when one said to sir, “I want the moon.” Sir replied “Go on. You may get it.” He never thought it to be impossible. It is his one of the greatest virtues.

As a man, he is unrivaled. As a patron of education, he is a remarkable to the society. In the field of accounting, his contribution is outstanding. It is not possible to express in words. All the students from degree level, honours level, master’s level, ICAB, ICMAB, ICSMB, bank and all spheres of the business education used to read his books on accounting which are acceptable to all. Sir is also a researcher on business education.

He has contributed much in advancing business education in Bangladesh. Sir was the honorable Chairman of Department of Accounting & Information Systems in the University of Dhaka and latter he became the Dean of Faculty of Business Studies. Sir was Pro-vice Vice-Chancellor of South East University and Vice-Chancellor of ASA University Bangladesh too.

He was also an Advisor of the Caretaker Government. In all fields equally he is a remarkable person. At last, I would like to thank all of you for undertaking such a great venture on our sir Prof M M Khan.

32. Prof Dr. Mahmodul

Professor Mohammad Muinuddin Khan: A very extraordinary person

Professor Dr. Mahmodul Hasan, Faculty MBA/EMBA, School of Business, North South University

I know Prof. MM Khan for a long period of eight years when he was the Vice Chancellor of ASA University of Bangladesh. I also taught in ASA University as MBA faculty member. It was an opportunity for me to get introduced to Prof. MM Khan. In the year 2012 we organized an Environmental Summit on Climate Change which was sponsored by the Denmark Government. So Danish Environment Minister Sten Gede came to attend the summit at has invitation as he was VC. Mr. Sten Gede was the President of COPE (Environmental Body). So we completed very successfully huge summit and we focused on many things for Bangladesh in the context of impact of Climate change on its economy and I got his full support for the same.

In the profession Prof. MM Khan is my colleague. I teach Management and he teaches Managerial Accounting and Project Management. So as a Professor in Accounting he was a consultant to National Management Development Programme (NMDP) Sponsored by ILO/UNDP/BMDC during 1978-81. He was also involved with the World Bank training programme in it EDI organized for senior officials of South Asia.

As I came from Oxford I have huge experience earned from many colleagues around the world, but I found Prof. MM Khan as a very extraordinary person because of his teaching style and teaching format. Even my wife was his student. So I was one of his colleagues as a faculty and my wife was his direct student. I wish him all success in life as well a great appreciation for his long 50 years involvement in this noble profession.

34. HM Ziaul Hoque

Professor Mohammad Muinuddin Khan: One of the architects behind the creation of the Faculty of Commerce in Dhaka University

H. M. Ziaul Hoque Khan FCA, Deputy Managing Director, IDLC

It is indeed a great pleasure and privilege for me to say something about Professor Mohammad Muinuddin Khan. Like many of the business and commerce graduates, Professor Khan was my teacher. I owe a great deal to him for being a Professional Accountant. My inspiration for enrolling myself with KPMG Rahman Rahman Huq, Chartered Accountants, for chartered accountancy mainly came from him. Professor Khan always highlighted in his class the importance and role of Professional Accountants for the development of the society through ensuring good governance, transparency and accountability.

I first met Professor Muinuddin Khan in 1987 when I was a first year student of B. Com (Hons.), in Accounting at Dhaka University. During my six years study (Honors and Masters) at Dhaka University I had the chance to take four courses taught by Professor Khan. Attending Professor Khan’s classes was an eye opening and was neither unfriendly nor frightening; rather he was friendly, caring and very much approachable.

Professor Khan’s reputation as a class room teacher is legendary. He made complex business and accounting lessons easier using real-life examples, which helped students to easily conceptualize difficult technical concepts. Any student could come to him any time on any matter. In fact, he was a man of extraordinary qualities – a man of uncommon kindness. His doors as well as his heart were always open for his students. To me, he performed his duties as a Professor with utmost devotion, dedication, seriousness and honesty.

Professor Khan wrote different books on accounting and advanced accounting. These text books played a pioneering role in professionalizing accounting education in Bangladesh. It will be very difficult to find a commerce graduate, be from Dhaka University or elsewhere, who did not study those great accounting books. Professor Muinuddin Khan not only served Dhaka University in the capacity of Dean of the Faculty of Business Studies and Chairman of the then Department of Accounting for two terms, he also worked for Private Universities in different capacities which includes highest positions of Vice Chancellor and Pro-Vice-Chancellor.

Professor Muinuddin Khan, no doubt, was one of the architects behind the creation of the Faculty of Commerce in Dhaka University, which played an important role both for the expansion and modernization of commerce education in Bangladesh. His wide knowledge and research work and serving different important Govt. projects consultant contributed significantly toward the expansion and development of business education. This also helped the business and accounting education get focused and importance to the Policymakers.

As I mentioned earlier, his accounting books made significant contribution in filling the critical need for accounting books for which there was a great dearth at the that time to the commerce students. Today, a good number of accounting professionals, either in the accounting profession or in corporate management are the students of Professor Khan.

Professor Mohammad Muinuddin Khan: His speech inspiring us at every step of our life

Mohammad Masudur Rahman

Our private teacher of Accounting during the period through SSC preparation was Biswas Sir and one day he said that all your courses are completed and revised, so you need not come to my house for this course. But, if you want to learn more, first buy two books, and then you might come across one of Prof. MM Khan and other was of Gazi Abdus Salam.  Only 8 of our friends bought the books and we started practice. I asked the teacher, “Why you asked us to buy those books, Sir”.  Biswas Sir said, “MM Khan Sir is my teacher at Dhaka University and his book is a good one for brighter students.’’  It was the first time that we came to know about Professor Md. Muinuddin Khan Sir.

Another brighter and memorable occasion was that during the flood in 1998 Prof. AK Azad Chowdhury, the then VC of DU asked us to make “RUTI Making CAMP’’ and we just jumped in doing it. Works were going on in about 40 units comprising few students from each unit. One day we met Professor Md. Muinuddin Khan Sir in his office at the Academic Building of Commerce Faculty. Sir’s office was in the ground floor and was exposed to natural view through window. We three friends stated him about our heroic RUTI Bananor Goppo. His speech on that day is inspiring us at every step of our life. I am so happy to work with him as his colleague now just after about 17 long years. We pray for his healthy life.
