Established in the times of the British Raj in 1921, the University of Dhaka (Dhaka University i.e. DU) is the oldest, and the largest public university in Bangladesh. Soon after the Partition of India was brought into effect, DU became the hub for all progressive and democratic movements in Pakistan.The University of Dhaka has survived through revolutionary phases of history, and by the time Bangladesh gained independence and emerged as the People’s Republic of Bangladesh in 1971, the university had already established itself as a source of stable, enlightening, andpioneering support. Equipped with a rich history, distinguished scholars as faculty members, well noted alumni, and the constant yearning and the necessary tools for spreading knowledge, Dhaka University is often referred to as “the Oxford of the East.”

Many of Bangladesh’s noteworthy individuals are from among the successful alumni of this respected institution. Beginning from the founding father of Bangladesh – Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the Nobel Peace prize winner – Muhammad Yunus, a physicist best known for his work on quantum statistics -SatyendraNath Bose, the first foreign secretary of Bangladesh – AbulFateh,a great educationalist and philologist – Muhammad Shahidullah, a reformer -Leela Roy, poet – Shamsur Rahman, to countless presidents, government officials, judges, doctors, lawyers, artists, writers, scientists, economists, accountants, managers, bankers, teachers, etc. have graduated from this University.

Besides being an excellent source of education and knowledge to the national citizens, Dhaka University has also gained critical acclaim outside of the country. Many of the faculty members have earned international acknowledgement, along with alumni members who have succeeded remarkably in attaining higher education abroad. This helps to attain a more enhanced reputation for the university outside of Bangladesh. Dhaka University has often ranked as one of the top universities in Asia, as has also gained recognition at a greater international level.

Dhaka University is dedicated to the improvement of learning, and the institution promotes research in every field of knowledge. The course curriculums are known to be updated frequently, and new projects and research opportunities are explored on a regular basis.The institution’s vital role in spreading higher quality education in Bangladesh and abroad needs no special commendation. The high quality and standard of education attracts promising students who apply for getting admission to this prestigious university.With the aim of constantly contributing towards the country’s progress and prosperity, the institution does its best to keep up with the national social challenges, and tries to operate at the level of other universities in the developed world. However, there are more efficient ways that the university can use to incorporate and implement the necessary changes to meet such diversified tasks.

This process may be initiated by editing the curriculum and teaching methods in the university. The education procedure in Dhaka University could be adjusted to match the curriculums and practices of universities from various developed countries. The use of practical knowledge and experience is crucial in building up strong professional individuals.

Students are often sent to the faculty of Business Studies for practical knowledge and experience. Being a former student of the Department of Management, I can say that we have been well-trained by experiencing real life scenarios, and learning lessons concerning the practical application of our subjects. The Management department of Dhaka University is, of course, a high profile department in the institution where the graduates head out to eventually lead in all the professional fields in Bangladesh. So, it is vital that along with the BBA and MBA students in the Management Department, students from other departments should also be engaged with other relevant government and private organisations, institutions and offices so that they may attain the necessary practical knowledge. This would aid the university to create proper professionals, and not only generalists.

It is high time that we allow progress and prosperity to take over our country and regain the satisfactory pace at which an independent country of our age should grow. This requires a massive replacement of non-professionals who are contributing inadequately to the growth of our country, with far able professionals who would stir up changes, and achieve the much needed progress in our developing world. The government, NGOs, and other industrialists should invest more in granting scholarships to deserving students. We should also take into consideration funding research work that would benefit the teachers and professors, and ultimately better the knowledge-pool of the University.

Such measures are sure to aid the university faculties in addressing new areas of knowledge, and create stronger stands in the existing subjects. This way, the strength and practices of the university may be preserved, and further improvement can be made to maintain the tradition of strong professionals who are being shaped by the impeccable educational services of such a great institution.
