Dhaka Medical College is the largest medical institution of the country. From the very beginning of this institution it is being the most dependable and ultimate health care centre of the all kinds of people of the country. It has great role in healthcare system of the country. The Department of Thoracic Surgery of DMC has started its journey under the leadership of Dr. Md. Kamrul Alam since July 2010.

Despite many limitations, this department is now almost a complete department serving all spectrum of thoracic surgical patients. In every year almost 200 majors cases and 600 minor cases are operated in this department. This centre is unique for multidisciplinary team work for complicated thoracic cases. The common services that are provided by this department are:

1. Surgical management of lung cancer.
2. Surgical management of esophageal cancer.
3. Surgical management of upper gastric cancer.
4. All sorts of chest surgery including lung surgery, esophagus, diaphragm, chest wall and mediastinal surgery etc.
5. Chest trauma care service.

Clinical Activities
Inpatient Department (Indoor Service)
Free Bed: Male: 16, Female: 6 (Facilities for Extra bed).
Paying Bed: Unlimited.
Lot of referral cases are managed by Thoracic Surgery Department keeping the patients in respective referral Unit.

Outpatient Department (OPD)
Twice in a week (Sunday and Wednesday)

Emergency service
Provides service in collaboration with Casualty, Neurosurgery and other departments.
Operation schedule
Routine: 3 days in a week (Saturday, Tuesday and Thursday)
Minor OT at word premises: Everyday
Emergency; Traumatic emergency done in Casualty OT

Academic Activities
1. Undergraduate and Post graduate class.
2. Faculties and trainees to attend clinical case presentation of surgery and allied once in a week and to present 3-4 cases in the year.
3. Faculties and trainees to attend journal presentation of surgery and allied once in a week and to present 3-4 journals in the year.
4. Faculties and trainees to attend central case presentation of all disciplines once in a week and to present 1 case in the year.

Training Activities
1. Internship training : 1 week
2. MS (surgery) Residency training under BSMMU: Thoracic Surgery training for 1 month.
3. MS (CTS) Residency training under NICVD, BSMMU Thoracic Surgery training for 6 months.
4. FCPS : 1 year residency training recognized by BCPS

Future plan
MS residency of thoracic Surgery and expansion of the Department: under official procedure.

Profile of Dr. Md Kamrul Alam

Professor Dr. Md Kamrul Alam was born in 1966. He comes of a reputed family of Kotchandpur, Jhenaidah. He graduated from Dhaka Medical College in 1992. He entered into government service in 1995. He completed his 5 years long MS (Master of Surgery) degree in Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery in 2001 from National Institute of Cardiovascu-lar Diseases. After completion of MS he opted his career in Thoracic Surgery. From 2001 to 2010 he worked in National Institute of Diseases of Chest & Hospital (NIDCH) as Registrar and Resident Surgeon (assistant professor).

In 2010 he joined DMCH as Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Thoracic Surgery. He was promoted as Professor of Thoracic Surgery this year. Under the leadership of Dr. Kamrul Alam, Thoracic Surgery of Dhaka Medical College started its journey and now it is a complete surgical department serving all most all kinds of thoracic surgical cases. Dr. Kamrul has many publications in medical journal and he presented many scientific papers in national and international conferences.
He is the examiner of undergraduate and postgraduate examinations under Dhaka University and BSMMU. He is the life member of Bangladesh Medical Association, Asthma Association of Bangladesh, Society of Surgeon of Bangladesh, Chest and Heart Association of Bangladesh and Bangladesh Association of Thoracic Surgeons.

Professor Kamrul performed thousands of minor and major thoracic surgeries independently for last 17 years. He gained experiences in diversity of thoracic cases including chest trauma, tumour and tuberculosis as well as esophageal and upper gastric surgery. His fields of interest are foreign body in the airway and digestive system, thoracic casualty, thoracic onco-surgery particularly lung and esophageal cancer and VATS.
