Cancer has now emerged as a major public health problem in Bangladesh. Day by day number of cancer patients are increasing. The Department of Radiotherapy of Dhaka Medical College & Hospital is the first government cancer treatment centre which was established in 1958. From its inception, the Department of Radiotherapy continues to play an important role in cancer patient care as well as academic and research activities.

In this department we provide both radiotherapy (external beam radiotherapy and brachytherapy) and chemotherapy. Radiotherapy is a cancer treatment that uses high doses of radiation to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors. Chemotherapy is a type of cancer treatment that uses one or more anti-cancer drugs.

This department is serving the nation for a long time with minimum man power and resources. In 1999, 2454 new patients were treated. In 2016, 5206 new patients were treated among them 2689 were male and 2517 female. Besides radiotherapy, patients also received chemotherapy in indoor.

At OPD (Outdoor Patient Department), daily about 100-150 patients are enrolled among them 10 to 15 are new patients. At OPD, new patients are given plan of treatment after consultation with senior doctors and follow up of older patients. Those patients who need chemotherapy and general management get admitted in the indoor dept. There is 70 beds in indoor and occupancy rate is 100%. Besides this, there is daycare facilities where 6-8 patients can take chemotherapy per day.
