Teaching of English at the Primary Level in Bangladesh

DSC_0019

Dr. Md. Aminul Haque
Associate Professor
Department of English
Edward College

Teaching is the inseparable part of education which imparts knowledge to human beings. It is concerned with education, knowledge and science. Teaching means to give education to someone. It helps men and women learn education. Without teaching no one can acquire knowledge and learning. Teaching of English means teaching which is governed in English language. So, teaching of English at the primary level in Bangladesh is a matter of discussion. Primary level of education means education from class I to V. There are about 44,200 primary schools in Bangladesh. According to a statistics of the Bureau of education about 90 lakh students attend these schools.1

Teaching of English in these

primary schools in Bangladesh is a glooming picture. There are about 1,90,000 primary school teachers of whom 1,16,000 are  trained. A major number of these teachers are merely SSC passed and work in their own village schools. There are numerous complaints from parents as well as from sensible local people regarding the method of appointment of teachers. Their attendance and the time and attention are given to their pupils and their alleged immunity from control exercised by the administrative authority.2 Though English has been recognized as an International Language, its teaching in Bangladesh is very deplorable. Its status should be raised in all spheres of life by efficient teaching personalities. As a developing nation we can afford English absolutely. English is a compulsory subject of study and it is taught from the very primary stage of life to the higher level. It is necessary to investigate wrong with the teaching of English in our country.

Statement of Problems

Of all educational institutions the primary school occupies the important position in the hierarchy. The primary level of education is the real seed of education. If a child is given proper primary education, he/she would be able to contribute his/her knowledge to the development of his/her country. But it attracts our attention to the problem of teaching of English at the primary level in Bangladesh. Most of the schools are ill-equipped, lacking in essential educational implements and other facilities.3 Most of English teachers in schools are not employed on the basis of English. They come to this profession from different strata. On the other hand, most of English teachers in their schools cannot create a congenial atmosphere of English. As a result, the state of teaching English results into a deplorable condition.

Private teaching of English is a setback to the poor students because they cannot undergo a special private course due to deficiency of money. Students are not properly motivated to learn this foreign language i.e. English. So, here needs proper motivation in order to develop the skill of teaching and learning of English. English teachers are not given high salary. So, they turn to private teaching in order to maintain their families properly in this competitive modern market.

Students are afraid of English. So, teaching of English does not result into a fruitful situation. Teachers do not use materials in their classes. So, it becomes a greater barrier to the learning of English. Teachers are not properly higher educated so that their knowledge in English is very poor and miserable. The condition of most of primary schools is deplorable. There hardly exist defined premises and furniture. Sometimes the classrooms lack the internal walls. Benches made of normal wood are used for the students to seat. If  blackboards exit, chalks and dusters are rarely available.

In Bangladesh English is

taught very poorly at the primary level. Students are acquainted with alphabet and word meaning in this stage. They cannot engage their mind in learning of English in this tender age. On the other hand, the surrounding environment is not hugely favorable to the teaching of English in Bangladesh. If a tiny pupil wants to talk to his friends in English, he feels shy or problematic. Students are not native English speakers. So, it is one of their major barriers to learning of English in Bangladesh.

Justification of  the Study

The main objective of’ the study is to determine the real status of  English in our Society today and to find out the state of teaching and learning English at the primary level in Bangladesh. School life is the best time to acquire a second and a foreign language. Teaching of English in Bangladesh has undergone a significant change over the years. Now-a-days most of the students should come to the schools, colleges and university with the command of English.4

Leaving the primary schools when these products with little knowledge enter into the secondary stage, they become more baffled and frustrated. Here we find the dearth of competent teachers, lack of efficient school management and Inadequacy of physical facilities. The result of teaching English Is the scientific and technological advancement. For Inter-national trade, commerce and communication teaching of English is essential from the very primary level. Four skills of English are essential: (viz listening, speaking, reading and writing).5 To bring a better change in the field of primary education, the constitution of Bangladesh made a provision for the universal primary education.

English should be the primary vehicle of communication in the English classroom.6  So, teaching of English should be effective from the primary level in Bangladesh. If we properly teach our pupils at the primary level, they will be able to communicate with other people in English. So, it is necessary to emphasize on the grass root of education. In schools it is taught as many homes as Bangla. It enjoys equal marks with Bangla.7 In both government and non government schools of Bangladesh English is a vital subject which enjoys equal status and marks with Bangla.

There are some kindergarten and A level or O level schools in Bangladesh. In these schools teaching of English has been emphasized very properly. But in the kindergarten schools teachers are not satisfied with their salary and accommodation given by private entrepreneurs. In A level or O level schools teachers are given high salary and good accom-modation. So, in such schools teaching of English is rich and planned. They follow oxford level of English and the syllabus and curriculum directed by oxford university, UK. The students who pass their A level or O level examination get free access to the universities of Europe, America and Australia. But in these schools the pupils of lower class and middle class cannot get access due to lack of money. Only rich people may send their children to these schools. But our main educative objective is to educate all children of the country.

Though teaching of English is somewhat is effective in urban areas of the country, it is not effective properly in the rural areas where English is not properly taught. So, it is our degrading notion for learning and teaching English in Bangladesh. Teachers  need to be trained in teaching a foreign language like English. It can be achieved if the teachers are trained in teaching a foreign language with short intensive courses, and are allowed to determine the size of their classes and to select their own teaching materials.8

Utility of the Study

The utility of this study is tremendous. Now-a-days English has been used as a medium regarding transfer of education, culture, science and technology. To maintain a good international relation, communication, acquisition of knowledge and the latest technology of the world the teaching of English needs to be proper and effective from the very primary level to the tertiary. For this reason we must know English better. It is a good sign that the government has taken a decision that English is our compulsory subject although a section of the intelligentsia evokes criticism. We have to think that English is our window to the world. As a result we may get access to the wide world. Realizing this point of view it should be taught effectively from the very beginning stage of education to the final.

Methodology

The curriculum at the primary level in Bangladesh is not modified and up- to-date. The methods of teaching of English need to be based on language and instructional device at the primary level in the country. So, it is a vital point to teach children language skills and give them instruction. Short stories need to be set on the basis of instructional points of view at this level. At this stage of life pronunciation should be strictly maintained. Though there is a problem in pronunciation and understanding, the methodo-logy of pronouncing English should be followed. A foreign learner  of English may be able to read texts too abstruse for the average Englishman and yet have difficulty in understanding an ordinary conversation.9

Of all the matters that have excited conscious people in Bangladesh, the most voluminous is the methodology of English language. Teaching is one of the noble professions. Those who accept teaching as their profession should dedicate themselves in building the efficient nation. Knowledge of English helps us in the compete international area. So, it is our utmost duty to evaluate teaching materials at the primary level in Bangladesh.

Implications as Guidelines The following are the points of expected article outline :

(a) Teaching materials should be prepared for the gradual progress of’ children’s mental faculty.

(b) Teachers should be provided with good remuneration and accommodation so that they can teach students properly at this level.

(c) Teachers’ training can be arranged in phases and trained teachers can be increased over a period of time.

(d) Students’ understanding should be increased. As a result they can easily understand English.

(e) Classroom performance should be increased in order to make the students understand this foreign language easily.

(f) Needs can be analyzed properly.  Questionnaires, structured interviews, texts  and observations can be guideline for course and material designers and for classroom teachers.

(g) It can make a positive contribution to developing the learners’ ability to perform in the target language.

(h)  This knowledge of English makes students’ employment at home and abroad. It also helps students complete in the international area.

So, teaching of English at the primary level means fruitful preliminary learning and teachng in Bangladesh.

Conclusion

It may be pointed out that teaching of English at the primary level opens up prospects of students at home. English is still necessary for a successful career in business or industry, in diplomacy or mass media or in the field of science and technology and in the higher education and research. For this reason, teaching of English at the primary level in Bangladesh needs to be proper and effective. It is necessary to design English teaching materials in accordance with the up-dated standard. Finally teaching of English at the primary level in Bangladesh will deserve the fruitful and our students will bring fame and prestige from the international competitive arena.
