CUET: The Civil and Water Resources Engineering

Dr. Md. Reaz Akter Mullick, Head of the Civil and Water Resources Engineering, CUET

Population growth and economic development continue to place increasing stress on global water resources, stresses that stem primarily from rising consumptive demands for limited supplies and increasing contaminant loads to natural waters. This growing population and need for clean water at everywhere demands specific professional on Water Resources Engineers to develop solutions that are environmentally sustainable, economically viable and socially acceptable. In view of that, the Department of Civil and Water Resources Engineering (CWRE) has been established in CUET with the vision of producing the knowledgebase to tackle the challenges in a scientific and engineering way.

Despite considerable advances in technology and engineering, managing and protecting water is still a challenge in particular to Bangladesh context. River erosion, deterioration of waterways are major concern for the development of river system in the country. In addition managing floods, droughts and climate change related disasters are becoming more challenging issues for water resources management and development. Proper utilization of water resources has become the fundamental element of the strategy to improve the quality of life in Bangladesh, contributing to sustainable development of the community and thereby reducing poverty and sufferings.

Mainstreaming Water Resources Engineering knowledge in the core of Civil Engineering field is a time worthy demand for the society now-a-days. To satisfy this basic demand, the CWRE Department of CUET offers Undergraduate Degree Programme to impart education towards an understanding of the complexity of water use and water resources engineering problems by offering a balanced curriculum, covering both engineering and management aspects of water resource development. Our aim is to teach students to acquire knowledge and hand on practice tool and techniques to come up with viable and sustainable solutions. Graduates from this department will be able to face the current challenges of securing water and effectively deal with spatial and temporal variability and uncertainty of water.

CUET: The Department of Disaster and Environmental Engineering

Professor Dr. Sudip Kumar Pal, Head of the Department of Disaster & Environmental Engineering, CUET

The linkages between development and risk of disaster are not difficult to visualize. Any development activity has the potential either to increase or reduce the risk of disaster. It is now well recognized that Bangladesh is one of the countries that are most vulnerable to climate change and sea level rise, and natural disasters exert an enormous toll on the development of Bangladesh. Such losses due to disasters setback social investments aiming to ameliorate poverty and hunger, access to education, health services, safe housing, drinking water and sanitationor the economic investments that provide employment and income.
In these backdrops, a sustainable development can eventually be reached only if engineers on all relevant branches can cope up with the above challenges. Furthermore, our engineers must be capable of seeking knowledge, researching and developing their own technologies by themselves in order to be skilled in professional practices in home and abroad. In this context, a comprehensive curriculum and course development concurrently with the objective of “training the trainers” are the first and foremost important steps followed at the Department of Disaster & Environmental Engineering (DEE). Accordingly, the department has been working on its curriculum development in a holistic way so as to become fully prepared for such challenges by improving the knowledge of engineers especially in disaster and environmental issues to the levels comparable with their counterparts in developed countries, but keeping in mind as well the local adaptations.
