Banks donated Tk 1.9b to PM’s Relief Fund: Atiur

Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Atiur Rahman said the banking community of the country has so far donated Taka 1.9 billion to the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund for creating employment for the victims of various disasters including Raza Plaza incidents.

Bangladesh Bank has taken a number of noteworthy initiatives such as supporting the victims and volunteers of Savar tragedy with the contribution of one day salary of its employees. Also BB and all other financial institutions (FIs) came forward with immediate cash support from their CSR fund to stand by Rana Plaza victims.

During both the Tazreen Fashions and Rana Plaza incidents, causing well over 1100 fatalities and manifold more debilitating injuries, the country’s financial sector and the broader business community have come forward with prompt, generous fund support for the rescue and relief efforts, Dr Atiur said.

Bangladesh Bank chief was speaking at a ceremony on handing over donation money to H. K. Shrestha, Nepalese Ambassador to Bangladesh as CSR Support to Nepal on behalf of Financial Sector of Bangladesh for the victims of the earthquake victims in the Himalayan country.
