The Department of Paediatrics of Dhaka Medical College & Hospital is providing quality services to a large number of sick children with limited resources for over 50 years. We have an academic excellence based on curriculum. This department is not only participating in academic arena but also showing excellence in patient care in indoor, outdoor and emergency services, research activities, publications and human resource development.
Faculties
Currently, the department is set up with the faculties of 06 professors, 03 associate professors, 05 assistant professors, 03 consultants, 07 registrars, 09 assistant registrars and 13 IMOs.
Inpatient wards
The deparment consists of 06 inpatient wards. These are General Paediatrics, Paediatric Hemato-oncology, Paediatric Neurology, Neonatal ICU (NICU), Paediaric Nephrology, and Palliative Care.
Outpatient services
There is one resident physician who works along with four outdoor medical officers for dealing with around 350 patients per day. There is EPI corner, breast feeding corner for outpatients. Outdoor clinics run once in a week except hemato-oncology and neonatal outdoor which provides daily service.
There are 12 outpatient clinical services in the department. These are Oral Rehydration Therapy (ORT) corner, EPI center, Breast feeding corner, Child Development Corner (CDC), Follow-up Clinics. Follow-up Clinics consists of Neurology, Hemato-oncology, Rheumatology, Cardiology, Nephrology, Endocri-nology, and Asthma.
Academic activities
The department conducts undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The department deals with the 3rd, 4th and 5th year undergraduate medical students through teaching learning strategies in large group, small group and self-learning. The ward placement is 4 weeks for 3th year and 6 weeks for 5th year students. Their assessment is done through OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination). At the end of 5th year students’ evaluations are done by formative assessment followed by final professional examination.
Currently, the department conducts MD (residency) Phase A, MD (non-residency) Part II and DCH courses. Now total students are studying at the department are 10; in MD (residency) Phase A-04, in MD (non-residency) Part II-03 and in DCH-03. Students already passed graduate course from this department is 08, respectively in MD (residency) Phase A-03, in MD (non-residency) Part II-03 and in DCH-02.
In July 2017, success rate was 75% in MD residency (Phase A), MD (non-residency) Part II and in DCH examination. Besides, FCPS Part II clinical examination of BCPS is also held here.

Patient care, clinical and academic activities go on side by side in the department. These are as follows:
Disease profile
Around 3000 neonates and 5000 children are admitted each year. Among neonatal illnesses preterm and low birth weight, perinatal asphyxia and neonatal sepsis are prevalent. Among infants and older children top illnesses are pneumonia, bronchiolitis, febrile convulsion, meningitis, enteric fever and nephrotic syndrome.
National and international conferences
A number of conferences both national and international, are organized by Bangladesh Paediatric Association (BPA) in collaboration with other medical associations like Bangladesh Neonatal Forum, Bangladesh Breast Feeding Foundation, Bangladesh Paediatric Pulmonology Forum, Bangladesh Society of Child Neurology and Development, Paediatric Hemat-ology & Oncology Society of Bangladesh (PHOSB), Paediatric Cardiology Society, Paediatric Endocrine Society, Paediatric Rheumatology Society, etc.

Ongoing trainings
The department is involved in many training programs of the Government of Bangladesh under the guidance of Director General of Health Services to reduce neonatal, infant and child mortality. These trainings are held not only for the doctors but also for the nurses and other staffs from different parts of the country. These training programmes are: Pre-service IMCI (Integrated Management of Childhood Illness), ETAT (Emergency Triage Assessment and Treatment), HBB (Helping Babies Breathe), KMC (Kangaroo Mother Care), Essential Newborn care, Palliative care, Management of Malnutrition, and Management of Childhood Tuberculosis.
Research activities
Several researches have been done and some are ongoing in this department in the form of dissertation and thesis. Many scientific papers are presented in national and international venues.
Conclusion
The Department of Paediatrics has become a role model for services and activities and since its beginning it has been making momentous contribution to prevent various childhood illnesses and is committed to achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG).
Profile of Prof. Sayeeda Anwar
Professor Dr. Sayeeda Anwar was born in Chittagong on 10th April, 1962. She passed SSC from Government Khastagir Girls’ High School in 1978 and HSC from Chittagong Government College in 1980. She completed her MBBS degree from Chittagong Medical College in January, 1987 and FCPS in Paediatrics from Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons in July, 1996. She started her carrier as registrar of Paediatrics at Sir Salimullah Medical College & Hospital in 1996. Then she joined as junior consultant in Shaheed Suhrawardi Medical College & Hospital in 1997. She joined as an Assistant Professor of Paediatrics at Dhaka Medical College Hospital in 1999 and after that she became Associate Professor at the same institute in 2005.
Then she was promoted as Professor of Paediatrics in 20th November, 2013 and became Head of the Department of Paediatrics of DMC on 30th June, 2016. She devoted herself in both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education as well various research activities in the field of Paediatrics.
